What the service is

Astra for Law is a workspace for attorneys that combines two things. First, an AI service: your requests are sent to a third-party large language model, which returns generated text. Second, a matter workspace: a place to organize client matters, upload and process documents, run structured document reviews, execute defined workflows, and draft, version and export work product.

The AI capability and the matter workspace are not separable in use. Material you place in a matter may be included in requests sent to the model provider when you select it as context for a request. You choose what enters a request; nothing is sent to the model that you have not put in scope.

Testing-stage service and preview access

Astra for Law is under active development and is offered as a testing-stage product. Features, models, limits, availability and these terms may change. Labels such as planned, in development or not connected describe capabilities that are not currently available, and you should not rely on them.

Account registration is open, but generation through the model is enabled for invited accounts during the private beta. An account without model access retains the workspace. No level of availability, uptime, performance or continuity is promised at this stage, and the service may be modified, suspended or discontinued.

No legal advice and no attorney-client relationship

JDM Legal Tech is not a law firm and does not practice law. Using the service creates no attorney-client relationship with JDM Legal Tech, and nothing the service produces is legal advice. The service provides technology-assisted research and drafting support to legal professionals who exercise their own judgment.

If you are not a lawyer, do not use output from this service as a substitute for advice from a qualified attorney in your jurisdiction.

Generated output and your duty to verify

Large language models produce text that is plausible, not text that is verified. Output may be incomplete, outdated, internally inconsistent or wrong, and may state case names, citations, quotations, holdings, statutory language, dates or procedural requirements that do not exist or do not say what the output claims.

When you expressly enable public-source research, Astra for Law may search limited GovInfo and Federal Register records and may show Wex links as secondary references. This is not comprehensive case-law research, a commercial legal database, a citator, or a negative-treatment check. Authority without an attached source marker may originate from model output and must not be treated as retrieved.

You are responsible for independently verifying every authority, citation, quotation, fact, date, deadline and conclusion against primary sources before relying on it, filing it, or delivering it to a client or a tribunal. A source marker identifies the retrieved record or provider excerpt associated with a proposition; it does not establish that the proposition is correct, controlling, current or supported by the full source.

Professional responsibility

You remain solely responsible for compliance with the rules of professional conduct that apply to you, including duties of competence, confidentiality, communication with clients, supervision of non-lawyer assistance, candor toward a tribunal, and any obligation to disclose or obtain consent for the use of AI tools.

You are responsible for determining whether using this service with a given client's information is permitted, for obtaining any client consent your rules require, and for any billing or disclosure obligation arising from the use of automated assistance.

Confidential and privileged information

Do not upload privileged or confidential client information to the service. Astra for Law is a testing environment and has not completed the controls a product handling privileged material should have: defined retention and verified deletion, customer-visible audit history, enterprise identity and independent security assessment are not implemented. The /security page lists what is implemented and what is not.

Use non-confidential material, hypotheticals, public documents or material you have redacted or are otherwise authorized to process. If you choose to submit confidential information despite this restriction, you do so at your own risk and you represent that you have the authority and any consent required to do so.

Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 18 and able to enter a binding agreement. You are responsible for the accuracy of your account information, for safeguarding your credentials, and for all activity under your account. Notify us promptly at the address below if you suspect unauthorized access.

Accounts are individual. The workspace is currently single-user: matters, documents, templates and work product are owned by the account that created them, and there is no team invitation, shared access or administrative console. Do not share credentials to give another person access.

Your content, matters and work product

You retain all rights in the prompts, documents, matter information and work product you submit or create. JDM Legal Tech claims no ownership of your content and no ownership of the drafts you produce with the service.

You grant JDM Legal Tech the limited rights necessary to host, store, process, transmit and display that content in order to operate, secure and support the service, and to transmit the parts you select as context to the model provider so that your request can be answered. This licence exists to run the service and for no other purpose.

You represent that you have the authority to submit the content, to permit its processing as described here, and to direct the use you request.

Model processing and third-party providers

Requests are processed by a third-party model provider. During the testing stage, authenticated requests are sent to OpenAI through its API and processed under the terms and configuration applicable to that account. A PDF whose text cannot be read natively may be sent to Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence for text recognition. The service also relies on third parties for authentication, database, storage and hosting.

These providers operate under their own terms, may change them, and may become unavailable. JDM Legal Tech does not control a provider's own handling of data beyond the configuration available to us, and we do not warrant any provider's performance. References anywhere on this site to future integrations do not represent that a commercial relationship, licence or live connection currently exists.

Usage limits and fair use

Model requests consume metered capacity that JDM Legal Tech pays for. Daily request and token limits apply per account, and each request records its token usage and an estimated cost in your usage ledger. We may change these limits, apply them differently between accounts, or suspend generation to protect the service or control cost.

Do not attempt to evade limits through multiple accounts, automated querying, or any programmatic use of the interface not offered as a documented feature.

Acceptable use

Do not use the service unlawfully, deceptively, or to violate another person's rights.
Do not upload material you lack the right to process, or that contains malicious code.
Do not attempt to bypass authentication, authorization, usage limits or any security control, or to access another account's matters, documents or work product.
Do not reverse engineer, scrape, resell, or build a competing service from the service or its output.
Do not present generated output as verified legal authority, and do not represent the output as reviewed by JDM Legal Tech.
Do not use the service to practice law without the qualification to do so in the relevant jurisdiction.

Data retention, export and deletion

Your content is retained while your account is active and as reasonably necessary to operate the service. Defined retention windows, automated export and verified deletion are not yet implemented; this is stated plainly because it is a reason not to place confidential material in the service today.

Work product can be exported from the workspace as a Word document at any time, so your drafts are not locked to this service. You may request deletion of your account and content by contacting us. Some records may persist temporarily in backups or where retention is legally required.

Intellectual property

JDM Legal Tech and its licensors retain all rights in the service, its software, design, documentation and branding, excluding your content. No licence is granted except the right to use the service under these terms.

Astra for Law is an independent JDM Legal Tech product built on OpenAI models accessed through the OpenAI API. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by OpenAI, it is not OpenAI's Astra for Law offering, and no relationship with any legal research provider, document management vendor or other third party named on this site is claimed. Third-party names and marks belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify their products.

Disclaimers

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED ON AN AS-IS AND AS-AVAILABLE BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

Without limiting that, we do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free; that generated output, extracted values or retrieved material will be accurate, complete, current or suitable for any matter; or that use of the service will produce any particular legal or commercial outcome.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, JDM LEGAL TECH WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, LOST BUSINESS, OR PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY, SANCTIONS, OR MALPRACTICE EXPOSURE ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE — INCLUDING ANY RELIANCE ON GENERATED OUTPUT THAT YOU DID NOT INDEPENDENTLY VERIFY.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNTS YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE THREE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR ONE HUNDRED UNITED STATES DOLLARS. The service is currently provided without charge, and this limitation reflects that allocation of risk.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, in which case the exclusions and limitations above apply to the fullest extent permitted.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless JDM Legal Tech from claims, losses and reasonable expenses arising from your content, your use of the service, your violation of these terms or of applicable law, or your reliance on unverified output in professional work.

Suspension, termination and changes

We may suspend or terminate access to protect users, the service or third parties, to respond to legal requirements, to control cost, or to address a violation of these terms. You may stop using the service at any time and may request deletion of your account.

We may update these terms as the product develops. Material changes will be reflected by a revised effective date and, where appropriate, additional notice. Continued use after an update takes effect constitutes acceptance where permitted by law.
